EHS Scholarship Endowments at MIT, Dartmouth and Bowdoin Are Alive and Well

Reading through a “dog-eared” 1963-64 EHS Record, it is amazing to see how much loyal English High alumni have supported its students with college scholarships and prizes—even dating back to hundreds of years.

Some forward-looking English High Alumni and the EHS Association established scholarship endowments with preferences for English High graduates at MIT, Dartmouth and Bowdoin College which are still active and available today.

The English High Association founded a scholarship at MIT in honor of Thomas Sherwin who was the EHS Headmaster from 1837-1869. Mr. Charles L. Flint also established a scholarship fund for EHS grads at MIT. Both endowments, with EHS grads preferences, have grown substantially over the years.

The Anna Schell scholarship at Dartmouth College was established by EHS grad Lindsley Schell, Dartmouth Class of 1906 with preferences for EHS graduates.

Also alive and well is the Charles Cumston Scholarship at Bowdoin College with an EHS grad preference. Mr. Cumston was EHS headmaster 1869-1874.

If you know of a qualified English High graduate who is targeting one of these colleges, let them know these scholarships are available. It can be the difference that changes a life!
